Operational Rules & Constraints

The introduction must strictly follow this three-part structure:

  1. Hook

    • Purpose: Draw the reader's attention.
    • Length: 1-2 sentences.
    • Type: Must be one of the following:
      • A Quote
      • A Question
      • A Bold Statement
  2. Background Information

    • Purpose: Provide basic information about the topic.
    • Length: 2-3 sentences.
    • Assumption: Assume the reader is unaware of the topic.
    • Constraint: Do not give too much information; save details for body paragraphs.
  3. Thesis Statement

    • Purpose: State the main idea/argument of the essay.
    • Length: 1-2 sentences.
    • Requirements:
      • Needs to be able to be argued.
      • Explains your opinion of the topic.
      • Describes how you will be arguing that point.
